Description

Stage 1: 17 km from the village Santa Maria del Tule ridding through farming fields and small villages, we can enjoy a view from the mountains surrounding the valley. This is a safe and easy ride with low traffic and makes a perfect option for children who can ride a bike and have the stamina to do it.The main villages we will be crossing are:

Santa Maria del Tule. – A place where you can admire one of the most popular natural wonders of Oaxaca, an ancient cypress tree more than 2000 years old and with an astonishing diameter of 58 metres. The tree is commonly named “Tule” which is the name of a plant that used to grow in the area years ago when the whole place was a swamp.

Tlacochahuaya.- In this village there is an old church built in the XVI century, if the church is not closed it is possible to visit its interior and admire the beautiful decorations made of natural dyes. Sometimes it is not possible to visit the church if we are not on schedule.

Teotitlan del Valle. – A village famous for the beautiful rugs made using traditional techniques and dyes obtained from plants, animals and stones. This is a place where we will have a short break for you to experience and learn about the whole process to make a rug. You can eat fresh fruit provided by our staff and chill while the guides put the bikes back on the van to be shuttled to the top of the “nueve puntas” mountain where the second stage of the tour begins.

Stage 2: We will get the bikes ready to pedal again, 7 Kilometres to the village San Baltazar guelavila, first  we will be riding on a paved route with low traffic to reach the place where Miss Serena and her family will prepare delicious homemade food using some traditional kitchen utensils that give a special taste (sazon)  to the food. After lunch we will keep pedalling 7 extra Kilometres through the mountains, we can enjoy wonderful views and vegetation, agave and cacti plantations, wild agaves like the tepeztate bloom in summer. We strongly suggest you to bring your cameras to take pictures of the beautiful features of the region including the river and open cave “las Salinas”.   Mezcal tasting. After you have biked, hiked and enjoyed the river and beauty of “las Salinas” we will go back by van  to san Baltazar Guelavila where we will visit a local distillery “palenque” where you will see the Mezcal making process and taste the different varieties they have to offer. We will return to Oaxaca city by van, it takes 1 and a half hours approximately.

What to bring: We recommend you to bring a t-shirt (long sleeve suggested), shorts, sport shoes, (if you have cycling shoes and pedals, we can put them on your bike).   Sunscreen, and insect repellent. If you want to swim in the river don’t forget to bring your swimming suit and towel.
