La culebra is our easiest bike tour; it is suitable for all levels making it a perfect option for children, seniors, and beginners. First, we’ll drive around 35 minutes to Santa Maria del Tule where we will start our tour. Most of the time we will be riding through farming fields, and we will cross some Zapotec communities where you can get a glimpse of the daily life of the rural communities of Oaxaca.
Our first stop is in Teotitlan del Valle; Teotitlán del Valle, is a famous Zapotec town of wool weavers, we will visit Josefina Mendez’ rug gallery where she and her family will give you a demonstration of the traditional art of this town. It is particularly interesting to observe how they dye wool using and mixing dyes that they get from fruits, plants, flowers and, above all, cochineal.
After our break in Teotitlan del Valle we will continue our bike tour riding through farming fields and some agave plantations; this road has some short climbs and descents that are fun to ride. We will finish our bike tour nearby Tlacolula de Matamoros where we will put the bikes on the rack and once ready, we will leave for Mitla to have lunch in a local restaurant. Afterwards we will visit the Prehistoric caves that are the highlight of this tour.
A guide from the community will show us the cave paintings and give us information about this interesting place. Once we have finished our tour in the caves we will return to Oaxaca City. On the way back it is possible to stop at a mezcal distillery "palenque" to taste and learn about the process of making this ancestral drink that has become very popular around the world. Approximate return time is one hour from the distillery to the city.
La culebra es nuestra excursión en bicicleta más fácil; es adecuada para niños, personas mayores y principiantes. Primero, conduciremos unos 35 minutos hasta Santa María del Tule, donde comenzaremos nuestro recorrido. La mayor parte del tiempo estaremos pedaleando a través de campos de cultivo, y cruzaremos algunas comunidades zapotecas donde podemos observar de forma breve la vida cotidiana en las comunidades rurales de Oaxaca.
Nuestra primera parada es Teotitlán del Valle; Teotitlán del Valle, es un famoso pueblo zapoteco de tejedores de lana, visitaremos la galería de tapetes de Josefina Méndez donde ella y su familia nos darán una demostración del arte tradicional de este pueblo. Es particularmente interesante observar cómo tiñen la lana utilizando y mezclando tintes que obtienen de frutas, plantas, flores y, sobre todo, de la cochinilla.
Después de nuestro descanso en Teotitlán del Valle continuaremos nuestro recorrido en bicicleta atravesando campos de cultivo y algunas plantaciones de agave; este camino tiene algunas subidas y bajadas cortas que son divertidas de recorrer. Terminaremos nuestro recorrido en bicicleta cerca de Tlacolula de Matamoros donde pondremos las bicicletas en el rack y una vez listas, saldremos hacia Mitla para comer en un restaurante local. Después visitaremos las cuevas prehistóricas que son el punto culminante de este tour.
Un guía de la comunidad nos mostrará las pinturas rupestres y nos dará información sobre este interesante lugar. Una vez que hayamos terminado nuestro recorrido en las cuevas, regresaremos a la ciudad de Oaxaca. En el camino de regreso es posible hacer una parada en una destilería de mezcal "palenque" para degustar y conocer el proceso de elaboración de esta bebida ancestral que se ha hecho muy popular en todo el mundo. El tiempo aproximado de regreso es de una hora desde la destilería hasta la ciudad.
